A neutral density filter is a specialized optical component designed to uniformly attenuate incident light intensity without altering its spectral composition (color). It is typically fabricated from optical glass, quartz, or plastic substrates, achieving attenuation through metal ion doping (absorptive type) or neutral absorption coatings (reflective type). Performance is characterized by optical density (OD) and transmittance (T%): OD is defined as OD = -lg(T%), e.g., OD=1 means 10% transmittance, OD=2 means 1% transmittance. Unlike color filters, ND filters attenuate all wavelengths equally, making them ideal for scenarios requiring light intensity control without color distortion, such as photography, laser power adjustment, optical measurements, and astronomical observation. They can be designed as fixed density (e.g., OD0.3, OD1.0) or variable density (adjustable via rotating polarizers), with some models featuring laser damage resistance for high-power-laser-applications.
