·Right-angle prisms are typically used to redirect the optical path or to deflect the image formed by an optical system by 90°. Depending on the orientation of the prism, the image can be either left-right consistent and upside-down or left-right inconsistent and upside-down. Right-angle prisms can also be used for superimposing images, beam shifting, and other applications.
When using a right-angle prism, it is usually coated with some optical films. Right-angle prisms have a larger contact area and have typical angles such as 45° and 90°. Therefore, compared to ordinary reflecting mirrors, right-angle prisms are easier to install, have better stability and strength against mechanical stress. They are the best choice for optical components used in various devices and instruments.
When the reflected light cannot enter the objective lens of a collimating instrument and cannot receive the reflected light; when only a portion of the reflected light can enter the objective lens, the reflected image will become darker. To solve this problem, the light-gathering aperture of the collimating instrument needs to be increased, which means higher cost, larger volume and weight of the instrument, and inconvenience of use. Right-angle prisms are unidirectionally sensitive reflecting mirrors. Using right-angle prisms as reflectors has the characteristic of unidirectional sensitivity, but their manufacturing requirements and installation requirements are very high. Manufacturing aspect: The error of the 90° ridge angle will produce double images in the pitch direction; the flatness error of the two reflecting surfaces, especially for longer right-angle prisms with curvature, will cause azimuth errors when using different parts of the prism; Installation aspect: To ensure the horizontality of the prism's edge, otherwise, azimuth errors will occur when aiming at an angle. The horizontality of the prism's edge is a special optical characteristic of right-angle prisms when used as reflectors.
