It typically consists of a large number of parallel slits or grooves that are equally spaced and of uniform width. In terms of principle, when a beam of light strikes the surface of a planar diffraction grating, diffraction occurs. According to the Huygens-Fresnel principle, each slit on the grating can be regarded as a new wave source, and the secondary waves emitted from these sources interfere with one another in space. Light of different wavelengths satisfies the conditions for constructive interference in different directions, forming a series of bright fringes—known as the diffraction spectrum.
