The reflector is an optical component that operates based on the law of reflection. It reflects, bends or focuses light by coating its surface with a film. According to its shape, it can be classified into planar, spherical and aspherical types. According to the degree of reflection, it can be divided into total reflectors and semi-transmissive-semi-reflective mirrors (beam splitters). The base material is mostly glass or fused quartz. The surface is coated with metal films such as aluminum or silver through vacuum evaporation, and a protective layer is applied to enhance durability.

In the past, when manufacturing reflectors, silver was often plated on the glass. The standard manufacturing process was as follows: after vacuum evaporation of aluminum on a highly polished substrate, one oxide silicon or fluoride magnesium was then plated. In special applications, since metal loss occurred, multi-layer dielectric films could be used instead. Because the reflection law is independent of the frequency of light, this type of component has a very wide working frequency band, reaching the ultraviolet and infrared regions of the visible light spectrum. Therefore, its application scope is expanding. On the back of optical glass, a metal silver (or aluminum) film is vacuum coated to form an optical element for reflecting incident light. Using a high reflection ratio mirror can double the output power of the laser; and it is the first reflection surface that reflects, with no distortion or ghosting in the reflected image, acting as the front surface reflection effect. If an ordinary mirror is used as the second reflection surface, not only is the reflection rate low, but there is no selectivity for wavelengths, and it is prone to ghosting. However, using a coated surface reflection mirror, the resulting image has higher brightness, more precise and error-free, clearer picture quality, and more realistic colors.
